San Antonio, TX — The 31st Annual SAFILM – San Antonio Film Festival wrapped up in grand style on July 27, turning the city into a vibrant stage for independent cinema, culture, and creativity. With over 200 films screened across four venues and a lineup of celebrated honorees, VIPs, and local talent, this year’s edition proved to be one of the most impactful yet.

“We brought the world to San Antonio, and San Antonio to the world,” said SAFILM Founder and Executive Director Adam Rocha during the Grand Finale Awards Ceremony at the Tobin Center’s Carlos Alvarez Theater.

A major highlight of the closing night was the presentation of the Marcia Nasatir Award for Excellence in Cinema to veteran producer Elizabeth Avellán, co-founder of Troublemaker Studios. Known for her work on Sin City, Desperado, and Spy Kids, Avellán was celebrated not only for her career achievements but also for her dedication to Latina/Latino storytelling and mentoring future generations of filmmakers.

Uno de los momentos más destacados de la noche de clausura fue la entrega del Premio Marcia Nasatir a la Excelencia en el Cine a la productora veterana Elizabeth Avellán, cofundadora de Troublemaker Studios. Reconocida por su trabajo en Sin City, Desperado y Spy Kids, Avellán fue celebrada no solo por sus logros profesionales, sino también por su dedicación a contar historias latinas y por guiar a las nuevas generaciones de cineastas.

The prestigious Texas Yanaguana Award was presented to Shaquille O’Neal, recognizing his wide-reaching influence in media and community development. The award was accepted on his behalf by his brother, Jamal Harrison, and featured a heartfelt video tribute from Shaq himself.

$10,000 Cash Prize: A SAFILM First / Premio en efectivo de $10,000: Un hito en la historia de SAFILM

For the first time in its history, SAFILM awarded a $10,000 cash prize for Best Narrative Short. The prize went to Tony Mucci for his debut film Money Talks, starring Francesca Scorsese. Mucci met the eligibility criteria by attending both his screening and the awards ceremony — a move designed to encourage filmmakers to engage with audiences and the SAFILM community.

Por primera vez en su historia, SAFILM otorgó un premio en efectivo de $10,000 al Mejor Cortometraje Narrativo. El premio fue para Tony Mucci por su película debut Money Talks, protagonizada por Francesca Scorsese. VIPs gracing the red carpet included Jackie Earle Haley, Vanessa Vasquez, Juan Ortiz, and Rutanya Alda, the 82-year-old star of Mommie Dearest and The Deer Hunter, who premiered her latest indie film Land of the Mustaches at the festival.

• Live Screenplay Reading hosted by Cedric Smith

• All-Women Filmmaker Panel titled Rebels and the Rebirth of Cinema, featuring Elizabeth Avellán, Feliz Ramirez, Felicia Villarreal, and moderator Randy Beamer

A Festival with a Mission / Un festival con una misión

Founded by Adam Rocha in 1994 as the Underground Film Fest, SAFILM continues its mission to educate, inspire, and uplift the next generation of filmmakers. The 2025 edition was made possible by a dedicated team of interns — many of them Rocha’s former students from Sonia Sotomayor High School — embodying the festival’s commitment to community-led arts development.

“This isn’t just a film festival,” said Rocha. “It’s a movement. We’re building storytellers, empowering students, and showing what San Antonio can be.”

Fundado por Adam Rocha en 1994 como el Underground Film Fest, SAFILM continúa con su misión de educar, inspirar y elevar a la próxima generación de cineastas.
