Pride San Antonio began its journey in 2004 with a goal that was both ambitious and heartfelt: to create spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals could gather in safety and celebration. In 2013, a new chapter began with the launch of QFest, an effort to revive the spirit of queer cinema that had once thrived in the city. "We looked at the history of queer film in San Antonio and saw that the last active festival ended back in the 1990s," said James Poindexter, a founding member. "We wanted to bring that back—not just the films, but the sense of community and pride that comes with them." With the support of local organizations, including the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, QFest quickly became a staple in the cultural landscape of San Antonio. In 2024, the city took a historic step by officially recognizing the San Antonio Pride Cultural Heritage District, further embedding the work of Pride San Antonio and QFest into the fabric of the community.

QFest has steadily grown into a beloved tradition, attracting independent filmmakers, emerging talent, and movie lovers from across the country. “Our goal has always been to support artists and educate the community,” said Sean P. Wise, Chair Emeritus of QFest and founder of Black Cloud Motion Pictures. “We’re proud to be one of the few festivals that offers juror feedback to filmmakers.” Since 2016, Wise has helped produce the event in partnership with Pride San Antonio, bringing a unique blend of artistry, mentorship, and inclusion to the festival experience. “We’ve showcased everything from heartwarming short films to bold documentaries,” Wise said. “It’s a space where stories matter—and where filmmakers know they’re being seen.”

For Alan Chambers, Entertainment Director for Pride San Antonio, the festival is part of a much larger mission. In addition to QFest, Pride San Antonio organizes the annual Pride Celebration at Crockett Park, held every year on the last Saturday in June. “We like to call it a party with a purpose,” Chambers said. “Our pride events help raise funds for eight local charities, and everything we do is about building a stronger, more inclusive San Antonio.” The film festival is an extension of that vision—offering free admission, open access, and a welcoming atmosphere for all. “What makes QFest special is that it’s for everyone—families, students, allies, and, of course, the filmmakers who pour their hearts into these projects,” Chambers added.

One of them was Lance Collins, a director from Maui whose short film My Parents was screened at the festival. “It’s about a high school student who comes out to his parents and how that changes everything,” Collins said. His team of eight crew members and a small cast worked together across Hawaiian islands to bring the project to life. He hopes others will be inspired to tell their own stories. “If you’re thinking of making a short film—just start,” he said. “Get feedback, find a good team, and put your voice out there.”
